Collage of 3 photos taken of families in Minnesota during winter - one outdoors, one in-home, one in-studio

It’s no secret that summer and fall are hands-down the busy season for family photography here in Minnesota.

I mean, I get it. Warm temperatures, late golden sunsets, and all that colorful foliage in the fall definitely stir up a recipe for a gorgeous backdrop for your family photo session.

That said, if you’re from Minnesota, you know that the winters here are nothing short of picture-perfect as well, yes? Winter sessions always end up being hands-down among my favorites! So if you’ve continuously punted scheduling photos for so many months you’ve lost track (and are now finding more room in your schedule), or if you’ve done the fall/summer thing for several years and you’re ready to switch it up, it might be the right time to consider winter family photos for your crew. Here’s some food for thought surrounding location considerations for cozy family photos during the winter months here in the tundra:

1. BRAVE THE OUTDOORS! NOT SURE HOW YOU'RE GOING TO KEEP WARM? HERE ARE A FEW TIPS:

a) Layers are your best friend - think non-bulky base layers like tights, long underwear, extra socks, etc. to wear under everything else

b) Look into body warmers for your shoes, mittens, etc. - they even have ones you can wear on your body!

c) Bring blankets! This can be a great way to cozy up between photos (and during as well)

d) Bring mugs and hot cocoa for an end-of-session warmup. You won't regret it. Promise.

2. SCHEDULE AN IN-HOME SESSION

I love scheduling your session somewhere that has meaning for you, and what's more meaningful than photographing your family in your home?! (Think your house might not be ideal for photos? Read this and reevaluate.)

3. STUDIO SESSIONS

if you’re not into braving the elements and holding your session at home doesn’t feel like your vibe, studio sessions are always an option. I have a photography studio space available located in Prior Lake that is all things bright, boho, and temperature-controlled.

I know most of us at this point are probably looking forward to warmer temperatures and springtime vibes. But, if I’m being honest, I’m still anticipating a few more mountains of snow are going to dump down on us before we get to May. So no need to wait to get those family photos on the books! Hit me up today and we can get the ball rolling on your session. (Holding out for spring/early summer? Those dates are filling in quickly! Contact me now to make sure you can reserve your spot.)
